Background
It was a happy childhood. Days were spent playing in the open air on the farm or reading a book under a tree. It all changed when he was nine. That was when childhood ended.
The crops on his father's farm had died off, as did the crops on many of the surrounding farms. Most people blamed it on the Ameto plant, which was relatively near. Nothing was ever proven. With the continued crop failures, the farm debts spiralled out of control. When he was nine, his father killed himself because the man just couldn't cope. As his mother held his hand and they looked into the open grave, she said, "Take this lesson son. The world ain't fair. Life ain't easy. Right here is your choice, you accept that as true and adapt to life as best you may or else you just follow your dad and crawl in there and die."
His mother was a strong woman and an inspiration. She sold the farm and they moved back into the city. When she wasn't working two jobs, she worked one and did night courses.
He, himself, did some part time jobs to help with the family finances. His primary focus, due to his mother's guidance, was his education. Through hard work and dedication he gained scholarships - first to a private high school and then to college to study genetic engineering. He's now researching his doctorate in Chicago, under the sponsorship of
Neofut Inc.
His main relaxation as he grew were his camping trips. They allowed him to return to nature, which he'd missed since moving to the city. It was on one of these camping trips that he met Jake (aka Loudest Howl). Jake recognised him for the garou that he was. They became good friends and remained so after Samuel was brought to his first Moot. There he received his garou name, Sees New Growth.
He's an active Theurge. His approach is one of cooperation with spirits, rather than trying to bind them to his will. What distinguishes him from most other Theurges is the way that he tries to seek out plant spirits to deal with.
Samuel believes that plants must be helped to adapt and evolve to the modern world. This is how they'll survive. He seeks to create plant strains which are more resistant to acid rain and pollution or which can actively cleanse pollution from the environment. His doctorate work is trying to develop
reeds which can breakdown oil and detergents in water. The obvious commercial aspect for his work will be in water treatment plants but Samuel plans to get his reeds out into the wild to protect natural waterways. He does not limit his research to using plant hybridisation and genetic manipulation. He realises that the true success of his plans will require the reeducation of some spirits and the forging of stronger or new relations between others.
Exile
Samuel refused to follow his Alpha's orders when a GM farm was attacked. Two packmates were slain by Weaver Spirits. Samuel was ritually renunciated from the pack. His surviving, former packmates deliberately destroyed any of his research they could find. They would constantly attack him, verbally and physically. His position in the sept was untenable. Apart from Jake, the best response he could hope for from fellow garou was to be shunned. hen the opportunity to pursue his doctorate research in Chicago arose,
Jake advised him to move. He provided Samuel with all his contact information for Chicago garou. Most of the contacts that Jake provided had closer ties to his old Alpha or dead packmates. They didn't make him welcome. Viktor was the only one who made any effort to welcome him. Together with Viktor, Howling Wind and Lee, they've formed a pack of outsiders, chosen by Coyote and led by a Ragabash.

Appearance
He's an average looking man, an unimposing figure. He looks his age - mid twenties. There are some flecks of grey on the sides of his head, which are apparent in all forms.
He has a light perma-tan from a life spent outside. He tends to speak with open gestures, indicating that he can be trusted. He's usually has a ready smile, which reaches his dark eyes. He can slip into a faraway look as his mind sorts through the information available to try to come up with an answer or insight.
He dresses appropriately for where he is. This would mean shirt and trousers in the laboratory, along with the obligatory lab coat and glasses. He also needs to work in the conservatories and fields when at the research facility, so he keeps clothes that he doesn't mind getting dirty out there as well.
He's most typically seen in boots, jeans, comfy shirt and his dark grey gore-tex jacket, with a Wile E Coyote badge on the left shoulder. He usually dedicates his clothes and his smart phone.

Home
He lives in a second floor apartment. It's small but the mirrors help to make it seem bigger. The first thing most people notice when the arrive is the lush plant growth. The apartment is filled with lots of orchids, as well as other house plants and a few carnivorous plants. The orchids are a tribute to his mother, who used to cultivate various types and hybrids orchids. Reading material in the apartment tends to be scientific or agricultural. Pets are allowed and although Samuel does not have a dog, he does have a dog basket with a comfortable cushion. The washing machines are in the basement. Samuel would be on a noding acquaintance with his neighbours but would not be close with any of them. The main commercial businesses on the street are a Japanese restaurant, Chinese restaurant and a convenience store. A farmers market is held about a block away every fortnight.

Work
Samuel does most of his active work with the reeds at the Neofut research facility. As well as laboratories, this includes conservatories and fields filled with GM crops. He shares a hot desk in an office with two desks with 3 other researchers. His contributions to the room decor have been the addition of a full length mirror by the door, a touristy desk tidy (with mini totem pole topped by a coyote) and several orchids. He has a locker at work, in which he keeps both neat clothes for the labs and outdoor clothes for working in the fields. He stores his laptop in his locker, when not bringing it home.
He also performs book research in the university. He has access to the library, including the sections denied to non-graduates. He's entitled to book laboratory time there but only does so if he wants to investigate something away from Neofut.

Kinfolk
His mother, Angela Romarco is not in Chicago and has no plans to move there. Her sister, Rosa is living in Chicago. Angela has told her that the family legends are true and about Samuel's nature. Rosa has never seen Samuel transform but has let him know that she understands and is ready to help him in any way she can. Sometimes when she looks at her 12 year old son Tony, she wonders if he too is going to develop into a werewolf like his cousin. Tony is kinfolk but is unaware of Samuel's powers. Samuel eats dinner with Rosa's family once a week and occassionally takes Tony camping with him. Rosa's husband, Peter Tenant is not kinfolk and is completely in the dark about Samuel. Rosa works in a gardening superstore on the edge of the city.

Contacts
Mr. Kissane is the one who interviewed Samuel for the Neofut sponsorship. He remains Samuel's primary contact for getting resources or information in Neofut. Whilst he spends some time travelling, he is often available at the Neofut research facility. He's in his early 40s and dresses neatly. He comes across as suave and in control. When he asks for something, he tends to get it - he's one of those leaders that people just want to please.
Professor Maverick is Samuel's mentor on the doctorate program. He's a bit of an ambitious, political animal. He plans to head the department and ultimately the whole university. He's aware of all university politics but also keeps a watchful eye on corporations and individuals involved (or with potential to be involved) in research partnerships.
Ranger Sam Davis works at the park where Samuel goes camping and hiking. He's in his fifties and is full of wisdom about nature and stories of how things used to be. He's an environmental activist but would not be involved in any violence. He tends to know what's going on in the park and is also aware of environmental issues and planned protests.

Nature: Visionary, Demeanour: Scientist/Omega
Samuel knows how he is to serve Gaia - by developing plants which are better able to resist the Wyrm. It's not a vision shared by many garou but it is one he will not relinquish. He works relentlessly, though not always obviously towards this end.
He is a scientist and his scientific approach and learning is apparent in his dealings with others and approach to situations. However, having already lost one pack, he has realised that a pack is necessary to assist him in achieving his goal. He does what is necessary to hold the pack together, willingly playing the role of the Omega so other egos can be satisfied. |
