Memento:
Keystone - A gilded cross that is worn on a chain around the neck. It is completely devoid of any etchings or inscriptions.

Appearance:
Mikaeus is African American. He has a buzz-cut, and is cleanly shaven. Soft features. Shy, reserved smile that doesn't reveal his teeth. Since the Return, he is often seen dressed in black, and only in black, with his earphones plugged in. He is 22.

Background:
Mikaeus has never known his parents at all. His mother died shortly after his birth for reasons unknown and his father's identity was known to no one for Mikaeus had been born out of wedlock. He lived with his uncle and his wife and they were like any other middle-class family struggling with life's daily vicissitudes.

… Except that Mikaeus saw death and misfortune everywhere. There was the impoverished, old man who was huddled out in the cold last winter and who could still be seen shivering in his tattered wool blanket even in the hottest of summers next season. Or the lady who had bad stuff done to her one night and was sometimes still seen sobbing and bleeding profusely in that parking lot over by the corner.

Worst was the little boy who had been looking for his head ever since he had stuck it out a little too far. Mikaeus once spent an afternoon trying to converse with it (the road hadn't exactly been empty, so Mikaeus got a few odd stares). But the boy didn't seem to hear him and simply tottered about, his limbs jerking about spastically and neck spurting blood that stained the road but which no one ever paid heed to.

Mikaeus knew intuitively that he couldn't tell anyone about it. And so he never did. He worked hard in school because he knew his foster parents worked hard to earn money to keep him in one. And for most parts, those creepy beings kept their distance.

The Brush with Death:
The streets of Old Fork City are places of dual natures. By day, they were transient spaces that people passed through to get to their destinations. By night, they became destinations in their own rights where people met and destinies cross, if only briefly so.

One night, it was violently so. It happened when Mikaeus was 20 years of age.

Mikaeus didn't realize it until he was surrounded by them. Hoodlums, very inebriated by the smell of their breaths. There was some white supremacist bullshit, but Mikaeus never got to defend himself verbally or physically. Everything happened so quickly, and then Mikaeus was bleeding out on the cold, wet pavement. As his life ebbed away, Mikaeus' last, bitter thought was how his life was simply going to end there. Alone, unnoticed by anybody, cold.

The Return:
For an indeterminate period of time, there was only darkness. But no, that wasn't all there was. There were screams, anguished ones, that came from nowhere and everywhere at once. There was a murmuring too. A chanting of sorts, it seemed to him, that gradually grew louder and louder until it drowned out all other sensations. Mikaeus wanted to cover his ears, but he had no being. All then, the chanting abruptly ceased, although the cries didn't.

Mikaeus' ears rang.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

What?

"Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."

And then, there was a burst of blinding light that filled all existence.

Geist: The Faithful Heretic
The Faithful Heretic was originally one of the scribes that followed the Crusaders in order to record their victories in battle during the Fourth Crusade and to praise their heroism for all eternity. However, witnessing the massacre of men, women and children caused him to doubt the sanctity of the mission.

When word of his wavering loyalty spread, his brethren branded him as a heretic. They imprisoned and starved him. Deprived of his freedom, scholarly prestige and his faith, he eventually wasted away and died.

The Faithful Heretic appears as a frail, priestly figure who nevertheless shines with light so radiant one cannot bear to look at him. That light is the veil of righteousness the Heretic cloaks himself with to prove his devotion to all.

The Faithful Heretic wishes to return to the Kingdom of Heaven. As penance for his sins of doubt, he vows to aid in removing the anchors of ghosts so that they may one day return to God's Heaven as well.

In forming the Bargain with Mikaeus, the Faithful Heretic was attracted to the young man's living circumstances, as he was Baptized at birth but has lived his life as a faithless man. He was also drawn by the manner of Mikaeus' death - the slow, hopeless one that was similar to his own.

The Faithful Heretic doesn't reveal his appearance often. Instead, Mikaeus experiences sudden outbursts of religious chanting and urgent commands resonating within his head. These tend to happen when Mikaeus seems poised to succumb to any of the seven cardinal sin or to acts of violence.
