BACKSTORY
Rolf Carter was born in Blackpool on June 28, 1982, the youngest of three sons. He is, in fact, the great-grandson of legendary archaeologist Howard Carter, the discoverer of Tutankhamun's tomb. Because of his lineage, Rolf has been watched by the Aegis Kai Doru for a long time, and occasionally nudged by their agents in the direction they want him to go. He developed an interest in anthropology sometime during high school and went on to study it at the University of St. Andrew.
Nowadays, Rolf works mainly as a researcher. It's not a huge source of income--most of that comes from royalties and the like from his great-grandfather's legacy--but he enjoys it and it make a nice supplemental income. This "residual" fame also gets him invite to a lot of high-class parties and the like, though he inevitably has to explain who he is, as he's not well-known enough to be instantly recognizable to any but an enthusiast. He's occasionally asked to speak at assemblies or conferences, but mostly he works in the field, visiting archaeological digs and ancient sites of interest.
It was on one such visit that Rolf had his first encounter with the supernatural. He was called to visit a site believed to be part of the ancient Kingdom of Axum. Whatever he saw there profoundly affected him, prompting him to begin focusing his research on religions and their roots in ancient traditions.
Shortly thereafter, at age 27, he was approached and initiated into the Aegis Kai Doru. His initiation rite took place in an ancient section of the sewers beneath London, an area still built in the style of the late 19th century, and concluded with him confirming the function of a relic hidden at the maze's end. He was appointed to the branch known as The Scroll, which handles record-keeping and location-scouting for new relics, as well as keeping tabs on magic-users and shape-shifters.
It wasn't long before he was given his first official assignment: a transfer to America to watch for signs of new colonial-era and American Indian relics. He's been in the States nearly three years now, and is beginning to get an inkling of just how much he's been manipulated in his life, and it's starting to annoy him. Although still loyal to the Aegis Kai Doru, he is beginning to chafe a bit at being left out of the loop. |
